Baby Milestones Month by Month: Your Complete Guide to 7–9 Months
Between seven and nine months, many babies become little explorers.
This stage is full of movement, curiosity, and growing independence. Your baby may begin crawling, sitting confidently, pulling themselves up onto furniture, experimenting with finger foods, and communicating in exciting new ways.
They are becoming more aware of the world around them—and of the people they love most.
As always, every baby develops differently. These milestones are simply a guide, and it's perfectly normal for children to reach them at slightly different ages.

7–9 Months
Sitting & Crawling
Many babies begin sitting confidently during this stage, giving them a whole new perspective of the world.
Not long afterwards, crawling often follows—although some babies shuffle, bottom-scoot, or even skip crawling altogether.
As mobility increases, you'll quickly discover that nothing is out of reach anymore.
This is the perfect time to encourage lots of safe floor play and exploration.
Fine Motor Skills
Your baby's hands become much more skilled between seven and nine months.
You may notice them:
- picking up smaller objects
- passing toys between hands
- banging objects together
- dropping toys repeatedly
- developing the beginnings of their pincer grasp
These small movements are laying the foundations for feeding themselves, drawing, writing, and many everyday skills they'll develop later.
Communication
Communication develops rapidly during this stage.
Many babies begin:
- responding to their name
- babbling "mama" or "dada" (not always with meaning yet)
- copying facial expressions
- waving
- clapping
- understanding simple words like "no" or "bye-bye"
Talking, singing, reading books, and simply chatting throughout the day all support language development.
Separation Anxiety
Around this age, many babies become much more aware that you can leave the room.
This often leads to what's known as separation anxiety.
Although it can be difficult, it's actually a positive developmental milestone. Your baby has formed strong attachments and now understands that people still exist even when they can't see them.
Comfort, reassurance, and predictable routines help babies feel secure as they work through this stage.
Finger Foods & Mealtimes
Around eight to nine months, many babies become more confident with finger foods.
This stage is about much more than eating.
Picking up food helps develop:
- hand-eye coordination
- fine motor skills
- independence
- confidence around food
Expect plenty of mess—that's part of the learning process.
Standing & Cruising
Towards the end of this stage, some babies begin pulling themselves up onto furniture.
Others may begin cruising along sofas or coffee tables while holding on.
Strong legs, balance, and confidence continue developing over the coming months as they prepare for their first independent steps.
